Kite Surf Pro Announce Wave Tour 2012 Qualification System

Kite Surf Pro World Tour 2012 Logo

Long awaited by riders and industry alike, the qualification system for the 2012 Kite Surf Pro World Tour season has finally been released by the IKA (International Kiteboarding Association).

As the governing body of kiteboarding that sanctions the KSP, the IKA are the guys who make the rules.

Check out their statement from yesterday:

Qualification System for KSP World Tour events

The qualification system for the KSP world tour shall give the top wave riders in the world the opportunity to compete against each other, while creating a clear pathway of how to enter a KSP event and giving riders from as many nations as possible a chance to compete.

Slots for the 24 riders male fleet are allocated as follows (for the women's fleet, 50 % of the quota each)

  • Top 8 from previous season are pre-qualified
  • 2 wild cards for KSP tour
  • 2 local wild cards
  • 2 wildcards for PKRA

Remaining slots are solely given to include more nations – this means except from the slots above, only riders from nations that are not yet represented are accepted.

If there are more nations applying then slots are available, places are given in the order of regional strengths until all slots are filled (in the order South America, Europe, North America, Africa, Oceania, Asia, then from the beginning again). The IKA executive committee may deviate from the order of regions and nations in order to ensure highest quality of the selected riders, e.g. require a minimum of competition experience, results and/or performance to be expected.

If there are less nations applying then slots are available, then additional places are given to nations in the order of regional and nation strength.

If more than one rider applies from a nation eligible for a slot, then the national association nominates the rider. If no national association exists, then the IKA executive committee after consultation with the KSP will decide.

If any of the pre-allocated slots are not taken by the riders, these slots go to the pool for the nations.

If slots are not taken shortly before the event, they may be filled with local wild cards or, if possible, alternate riders from the waiting list on a first come-first serve basis.

Applications can be made online at the KSP website until March 1st (here).

So, fancy yourself a wild card?

Four Videos Friday - BMX Bosses

This is something new I'd like to start here at Chasingair. It's a little feature where I'm going to basically hit you with my four favorite videos of the week. It's not always going to be only BMX but since that's what I'm involved with the most, it's definitely going to be somewhat biased.

First off from one of my favorite UK riders, Ben Lewis who's just been hooked up by The Source down in Hastings, along with his current sponsors of FitBikeCo, Animal Bikes, Etnies, Quitin and DUBBMX. He's a pleasure to watch ride and this edit will chill you right out >

Next up we have 20Twenty's Alex Donnachie from last year's released DVD 'ABD(n)', a little more raw than the previous video but he has some big moves

Coming in, all the way from Israel, Derby local Matt Roe who rides for Mutiny Bikes. He traveled to Tel Avivv on a mission to find some new transitions to ride. Filmer and editor Rich Forne was behind the lens for this one >

And finally the happiest guy I've ever met in BMX, even when he's falling off stuff, Jared Washington and new guy to the team Dominic Biro, both riders of Federal Bikes. They've put out this sweet edit to end our round up of FVF. Till next Friday, enjoy >

Rossignol scoop ISPO Award for New Xelium Binding Tech

Rossignol Xelimu Bindings

Like to know that you're skiing on eco-friendly bindings! Well next season's Rossignol Xelium tech bindings will do the job.

Rossignol have made an impression at this year's ISPO with their new binding technology Xelium - awarded an ISPO AWARD 2012.

Th Xelium system has been developped with aim of minimising the impact on the environment, with the help of the independent swiss agency “Quantis” who have made a life cycle assessment. They determined precisely what the benefits are, when compared with a traditional binding system. This is what they found...-          The impact on human health (carcinogens, etc…) is reduced by 38%,

  • The impact on the ecosystem ( ecotoxicity, etc…) is reduced by 34%
  • The impact on the climate change (CO2 emissions) is reduced by -33%
  • This new system needs 29% less natural resources
  • The quantity of water used for manufacturing is reduced by 26%
  • The quantity of water turbined to produce energy is reduced by 49%

This new system is one of the lightest on the market. The bindings are 700g less than a traditional one but they're not available yet - you'll have to wait until next season 2012/2013. Sorry!

Kite Surf Pro Releases 2012 'Dream Tour' Schedule

Kite Surf Pro World Tour 2012 Logo

Kite Surfing Professional World Tour Shot

Following a groundbreaking and highly successful inaugural season, which pushed competitive kite surfing to epic new heights, the KSP has announced its widely anticipated 2012 World Championship Kite Surfing Tour schedule. Ohhh yes.

Featuring world-class venues, the KSP Tour once again promises nothing short of the most phenomenal surf conditions for the world's kite surfing elite, who will battle it out over the coveted IKA-sanctioned World Championship title. All four Kite Surf Pro events will feature a 10-day holding period and a €15,000 prize offering. Nice.

The KSP Tour will kick off at Europe's kite surfing mecca, Guincho Beach in Cascais, Portugal, from June 1 to 10. The side-onshore wind conditions at Guincho's right-hand beach break will surely expose the progressive new school aerial movement, bringing it to the forefront of competitive kitesurfing for the world to witness.

Second stop will take the KSP back to 2011's kickoff location, Le Morne, Mauritius for the One Eye Pro, scheduled September 7 to 16. A long, left-hand reef break famous for its strong side-off shore winds and barreling, near-perfect, head-high to quadruple-overhead surf - One Eye will keep this year's KSP crowd on edge.

Next up, Europe's secret kite surfing jewel and home to one of the planet's biggest waves -  Ireland. Running from October 19 to 28, Ireland's Kite Surf Pro will incorporate a unique mobile format, capable of showcasing each day's action at the choicest of locations on the country's wild and swell-abundant west coast.

Bringing the KSP's 2012 tour to a close, Maui's legendary North Shore will host the pinnacle of the Kite Surfing World Championship Tour—the Ho'okipa Kite Surf Pro—running November 29 to December 8. One of the world's most highly regarded wind and wave locations, Ho'okipa is generally reserved as a surfing and windsurfing only venue. The Ho'okipa Kite Surf Pro will mark the first-ever World Championship kite surf competition at the infamous Hawaiian reef break.

"I really don't think we could have wished for a better and more well-rounded tour for the 2012 season," says Tour President Kristin Boese. "It is going to be exciting to see which riders will do best in all the different conditions. We managed to meet the demand of the riders to add a side-onshore beach break to the calendar with the event in Guincho. We are just as excited about the Ireland event that is going to be a total box of chocolates with amazing potential. And Ho'okipa and One Eye are without a question two of the places that we had on our wish list from the very first talks about the tour."

"I am also really looking forward to working with our amazing group of local organizers that have already become such a strong part of the KSP," Boese continues. "We are all so excited to see what incredible treasures await us in 2012."

As reigning World Champions Airton Cozzolino (Italy/North Kiteboarding) and Ines Correia (Portugal) defend their titles amidst a field of 24 men and 12 women at each Kite Surf Pro event, an International Surfing Association-accredited panel of judges will once again score the year's next-level riding. With 20 countries represented on tour last year, 2012 will surely draw a wide range of talent from across the globe.

Featuring a live webcast with live scoring, 2012's Kite Surf Pro events will broadcast the heat-by-heat action around the world in real time. Additionally, the new season will also bring another round of Fantasy League, with some major prizes up for grabs.

Shaun White Scores 100 at Winter X Games Snowboard SuperPipe

Unbelievable....White does it again. This time with a dodgy ankle!

Shaun White scored the first perfect score in Winter X Games history in Men's Snowboard SuperPipe finals on Sunday, winning his fifth consecutive gold medal - a first in Snowboard SuperPipe. The victory comes after a left ankle sprain that plagued him earlier in the week forced him to miss the Slopestyle event he had hoped to compete in.

White commented, "I've been wanting that 100 forever. Thank you so much, everybody, tonight. I came here on a mission: I couldn't compete in Slope and it kind of broke me. I didn't know what to do. I was sitting around icing my ankle wondering if I could even ride tonight, and I kind of took out a little bit of that anxiety and anger that I couldn't compete in Slope in the pipe tonight."

White had already sealed the win in the first run after posting a score of 94.00, beating out Swiss rider Iouri Podladtchikov, who came close with a 93.00, and Japan's Ryo Aono. But White was determined to unveil his newest trick, a frontside double cork 1260. He fell attempting the trick in Run 2, then nailed it on the final wall of his victory lap in a run that included a massive 18-foot backside air, a fronstside double cork 1080, a Cab double cork 1080, a frontside stalefish 540, a double McTwist 1260 and the frontside double cork 1260. White is officially the only person to have ever landed a frontside double cork 1260 in competition.

"I was a little upset with my first front double 12 tonight because it just wasn't there and I put my face in the wall," White said. "I was just trying to shake that off and get back up and do it again, and it happened."

Many fans expected Podladtchikov, who is the only person besides White to have successfully landed the double McTwist 1260, to break out a secret weapon of his own.

"I'm real happy because I've never put that run down so clean," said Podladtchikov. "I wish I had one more run. I'm just getting warmed up! For me it was my personal best run by far, for sure. I guess it was one of those days."

Switchbank Bindings Unveiled - Coolest Snowboard Bindings Yet?

Switchback Bindings

Switchback Bindings The Combo & The Gulli-Gudmundsson Combo

The Combo & The Gulli-Gudmundsson Combo

Check out these beauties! We've heard a lot about Switchback Bindings for a while now but finally we're getting a look at them.

Swicthback bindings have finally been unveiled and bring a modular approach to the game. You decide what parts of the binding you want to keep in your setup and which you don't. You can mix and match colours and put it all together in just a few minutes without the need for any fiddly tools - well apart from attaching them to the board, but still that's an unbelievable offering to the market.

One of the coolest things about Switchback Bindings is that they now make it possible for everyone to experience and enjoy no-back riding. You can switch out your highbacks for their no-back insert in just a few seconds and switch back again in minutes. Meaning you can switch between riding hard on the pistes and kickers and switch it up to have a more skater feel in some pow and on cruising jib lines.

Instead of having to buy a complete setup in a certain colorway. You can now customize your own. Don’t want forward lean? Don’t pay for it! All of Switchback's components fit their baseplate so no need to worry there.

And don’t be fooled by the slick look of these babies, Switchback bindings are packed with smart features like:

  • Tool-less footpad adjustment – Smart basepad that gives you cushioning where you want it but precision where you need it and reduces the amount of hard plastic in direct contact with your board.
  • Tool-less strap position adjustment.
  • Tool-less natural pivot forward lean adjustment on the FL Highback.
  • 2 way strap adjustment on both straps – to help get you centered with any boot in a matter of seconds.

Next season Switchback launches in four components and several options.

  1. The base, which comes with the mounting hardware, basepadding, two sets of disks (1 set with offset holes for smaller or bigger feet), extra ankle strap pins and no-back insert.
  2. Toe and Ankle straps including ladders and ankle strap pins.
  3. Footbed padding/disc cover in 2 different styles. (ST Pad and a Jib Pad with extra cushioning).
  4. Highback in 2 styles – the ST Highback and the FL Highback which is pre-rotated and has tool-less natural pivot forward lean adjustment.

All of these components will launch in 5 color-ways for the first season. Matte Black, White, Red Dawn, Agent Orange and Blue Algae.

We're eagerly awaiting for these funky little mothers to drop into stores, which will be the start of next season. Shame it's not now we say!

Switchback bindings are strapped into by their international team of shreds:
Eiki Helgason
, Halldor Helgason
, Ethan Morgan
, Ryan Paul
Gulli, Gudmundsson
, Kevin Sansalone

Stradalli Cycle Launch New Road Bike Sorrento SLR

Stardalli Sorrento SLR Carbon Bicycle

Stradalli Cycle, the high performance carbon bicycle manufacturer from Florida, has just launched its newest full carbon road bike – the Sorrento SLR. Redesigned for 2012, the Stradalli Sorrento SLR offers performance and quality at an outstanding price. The new bike claims to offer better handling, better control and better performance thanks to its new stiffer and lighter headtube.

The tried and tested frame, which is made from 100% 3K carbon fiber, is used by multiple Pro race teams. Meaning that Sorrento SLR owners will get a world class carbon fiber race bike for the price of an aluminium road bicycle. Not bad.

The high-modulus carbon has a tensile strength of 50 tons per square cm. This allows Stradalli to build a light, yet stiff frame, which includes a curved aero wind shelter for the rear wheel giving lower wind drag.

“The all new 2012 Stradalli Sorrento SLR is the most affordable bike we have ever made,” said Thomas Steinbacher of Stradalli. “But we refuse to cut corners on quality, which is why the Sorrento SLR comes with a full SRAM 10 speed group and Stradalli aluminium wheels.”

As one of the most advanced full carbon road bikes on the market the Stradalli Sorrento SLR offers incredible value for money. With its full carbon fiber frame, SRAM group and exceptional wheelset, this is a pretty good price for this kind of bike.

Check out this bike and more at their website http://www.stradalli.com

We're waiting for this bike to start popping up at other stores, until then you can check out other road bikes on the main site.

Wacky (But Apparently Revolutionary) BladeRunner Skateboard Now Available

Aris Sport Blade Runner Skateboard

You've most likely have heard the jokes about reinventing the wheel, but now one company can seriously say that they did reinvent the wheel.

ARIS Sport has released a skateboard with their new conical wheel design. The new design is apparently better for carving; curved wheels allow the skateboard deck to roll at extreme angles, allowing the rider to cut sharp right and left turns while maintaining balance and control of the skateboard even at low speeds and flat ground.

The company has launched their project on the Kickstarter website, if you would like to support the project and receive a Blade Runner Skateboard please visit:

Deflect this! Two New Action Sports Brand Ambassadors for DEFLEXION Technology

Deflexion technology protective gear front

Deflexion technology protective action sports kit back

DEFLEXION™ technology from Dow Corning is teaming up with action sports athletes Xavier de le Rue and Matt Crowhurst to demonstrate how DEFLEXION™ technology can be used by impact protection apparel designers to create tailored, customized impact protection gear for action sports athletes. DEFLEXION™ technology, a patent-pending silicone-based impact protection textile, will be incorporated into impact protection apparel specifically designed and customized for Xavier's and Matt's specific needs - very nice. Apparently both athletes will be involved in the design of their gear from start to finish, helping to select and position the right combination of materials from the DEFLEXION™ product range, which is pretty cool. We wonder if that means design too?

DEFLEXION™ technology claims to be breathable and flexible, giving athletes the freedom of movement and comfort they need, without compromising on the level of impact protection provided. What sounds cool about DEFLEXION™ materials is that they are designed to provide impact protection in all conditions whether hot, cold or wet, and remain flexible. They materials can apparently also be easily cut into different shapes, built up in layers and applied exactly where impact protection is required - which makes sense to us considering all other outdoors gear is customisable and has been for a long time.

We're particularly keen to see this stuff in action on Xavier, who is successful competitive snowboarder, who has won multiple Free Ride World Championship™ titles, Snowboard Cross World Championship™ titles and X Games™ gold medals. So he's a guy that needs some solid protection. Matt is also a badass that needs some hardcore protective kit. He has been competing and coaching in the wakeboarding world at the highest level for more than 15 years now.

Here's what they both have to say about the brand and kit...

"Proper protection is important in every sport yet impact protection equipment options for wakeboarders remain fairly minimal, which is why I'm thrilled to be participating in the DEFLEXION™ Ambassadors program," said Matt Crowhurst, professional wakeboarder and DEFLEXION™ Brand Ambassador. "With DEFLEXION™ technology, athletes will experience a shock-absorbing defense system that allows them to perform with confidence."

"When I'm on a mountain, I'm focused on being creative in my approach to a run, while at the same time tuning in to the nature and power of what surrounds me," added Xavier de le Rue, professional snowboarder and DEFLEXION™ Brand Ambassador. "Wearing customized impact protection materials that incorporate DEFLEXION™ technology gives me the freedom of movement, agility and confidence to test my skills in any situation I face."

DEFLEXION™ technology has become a protective textile of choice for leading active apparel designers. In November 2010, DEFLEXION™ material was featured in sailing gear made by marine apparel brand Henri Lloyd for use by competitive sailors and nautical enthusiasts. Most recently, DEFLEXION™ material was featured by Scott Sports in its new line of winter sports gear, announced in February 2011. Among other applications DEFLEXION™ technology is also featured in protective equipment made by Rukka for use by motorcycle riders.

DEFLEXION™ brand will be present at ISPO Munich, January 29 to February 1, 2012 at the New Munich Trade Fair Centre, Germany. Visit their booth in Hall C2 at stand C631 to meet brand Ambassadors and to hear how they have been experiencing DEFLEXION™ impact protection materials.

Check out the ongoing story with Xavier and Matt as they work with DEFLEXION™ technology on customized impact protection solutions for their action sports activities.  [http://vimeo.com/29966081 and http://vimeo.com/31652948]

Freeride Sessions Episode 1 in Chamonix

Freeride Sessions World Tour Chamonix Mont Blanc 2012

Freeride events and contests are the purest form of self expression in skiing and the format that pushes skiers to their limits. There are no courses, posts or man-made jumps. pistes or otherwise. It's just the skiers and the mountain. They must negotiate the natural mountainside in the most exhilarating and impressive way imaginable in order to score points. We love this kind of contest and Freeride Sessions is one of the best.

So, with endless tricks, lines and sheer madness, how the heck are these contests judged? Lets see...

As the FWT Judges’ Manual states: “A judge has to ask himself at all times how fast, how big and how much in control a rider is compared to how steep, how exposed and in what snow conditions the action is happening.”

This comes down to five categories: difficulty of line, control, fluidity, jumps and crashes. Once these categories are taken into account the rest is a piece of cake (apparently).

Red Bull Supernatural: A freeze is coming!

To get the ball rolling i'm gonna tell you about the new Red Bull project called "Supernatural". Now before we start thinking about all things that go bump in the night, we need to clarify what this is about. Most people who snowboard out there have probably seen or, at least heard, of the Red Bull video "The Art of Flight" released at the end of summer last year - which was epic by the way! Well RB being the RB, they've gone and raised the bar again for a new TV series which is going to hit us Winter 2012.

Imagine being able to create the most perfect setup but kind of naturally? Well naturally as in, when the snow fell it hadn't been modified...well watch this:

Are Ski Helmets Coming off Again?

Skier with no helmet injured on a ski slope

Following a new report by the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI), claiming that more than 5,600 Canadians seriously injure themselves every year taking part in winter sports, pediatricians and the media have been making a fuss and urging people to wear helmets and be safer. But when you look at the numbers a bit closer and remember that it's winter sports they're talking about (so obviously high risk activities) the report isn't as bad as it first seems.

An average of 18,975,000 people, over five years, skied in Canada each year, according to a report in 2009 by the Canadian Ski Council. So, that scary number of injured Canadians only amounts in reality to 3%. Nothing out of the ordinary there then. Also, that 5,600 figure doesn't even relate solely to the most popular activities of the winter sports spectrum, skiing and snowboarding, but to ALL winter sports. So the total percentage is even less for just skiers and boarders - it's more like 1.3%.

The report doesn't tell us much that we wouldn't have guessed ourselves. Take a look at some of the very unsurprising figures.

  1. "Boys accounted for 81% of those hurt" - boys will be boys!
  2. "Half of all hospitalizations during 2010–2011 for hockey injuries (542 out of 1,114) and close to one-third of all those for skiing and snowboarding (689 out of 2,329) were for people age 10 to 19." - so typical young, care free people then.
  3. "Of the activities studied, snowmobiling was the only one not over-represented by younger Canadians in terms of hospitalizations: two-thirds (752 out of 1,126) of serious snowmobile injuries occurred in adults age 20 to 49." - errrrr because it's a motorised sport perhaps?
  4. "Older Canadians most often hurt by falls on ice" - no shit
  5. "For all winter-related causes of serious injuries (excluding motor vehicle collisions), falls on ice were by far the most common cause: they led to 7,138 hospital admissions in 2010–2011, more than for all winter sports and recreational activities combined." - again...no shit. Anyone who's been to a ski resort knows of the perpetual frequency of elderly, clumsy and down right drunk accidents on ice that are more prevalent than injuries on the slopes.

What is concerning about the report, is that it claims there has been very little change in these figures over the past five years and the suggestion is that it's down to lack of helmets being worn. What!? But there's more helmets and ski protection on the market today than ever before! We all remember the days when it was completely uncool to wear a helmet, but the tables turned - for the better, didn't they? Better for skiers and boarders as fragile humans, better for the major ski brands and their product development teams and profits, and better for the image of the ski industry as a whole. It suddenly became very uncool not to wear a ski helmet. Secretly deemed a novice idiot, laughed at by 'real' hardcore skiers and seasonaires, and looked down on for not caring for your own safety if you weren't wearing one. And with this overdue shift, the days of wearing ill-fitting, ugly shaped buckets over our heads also dissipated, as the major brands twigged they could sell more 'essential' gear to the masses and started actually designing cool lids. Thank god.

So it's weird that these figures show no change in five years.  The choice of helmets is now so extensive, catering for different ski styles, fashion tastes and ages, that we really have no excuse not to wear a helmet for winter sports. And as Dr. Natalie Yanchar, Associate Professor of Surgery and Emergency Medicine at Dalhousie University, and Medical Director at IWK Trauma Care in Halifax, puts it. “Wearing a helmet is important for all ages to prevent a fun day in the snow from ending in tragedy—without question, it reduces the risk of serious head injuries in case of a crash.”

So, what is preventing people from wearing a helmet? Maybe it's the financial pinch everyone's been feeling the last few years? Is the helmet in reality rather considered a 'non-essential' bit of ski kit that can be passed on to make trips more affordable? Or maybe it's just that helmets aren't worn around resort where the higher percentage of injuries occurs. Either way a plateau seems to have been reached - well in Canada for now at least.

So the question is, can we promote safety anymore? Are we even able to prevent boys from being boys and kids from lacking fear and being reckless. Would we even want to?

One thing that is troubling, is that the tables could be turning back again. Helmets (like so many other things that become widely adopted) could become uncool again. Whispers of this have already reached us via friends in Chamonix, where apparently, quote: 'the crazy bastards here just wear beanies not helmets'.  The same crazy bastards who are also considered hardcore riders, undoubtedly throwing their crazy asses down crazy lines and hauling their crazy un-helmeted asses off cliffs. In other words...the trend setters.

Maybe the resorts and authorities have caught on to this already? Last year, the Nova Scotia government introduced legislation making it mandatory to wear a ski helmet on ski slopes, making it the first legislation of its kind in the world when it comes into effect next November.

Be safe friends, try not to follow the cool kids wearing beanies and helmet up.

The Future is Now - Now Snowboarding Bindings That is

We're excited. New bindings by Now Snowboarding that are set to be game changers have just been revealed by JF Pelchat.  The feedback has been amazing so far on account that the bindings apparently move more with your feet than with the board. This enables more feel for the flex in the snowboard, imitating the edging more familiar to a skateboarder. Some sort of axel that allows pivoting like a skateboard truck in the center seems to be the key to all the fuss, but check out the vid to see for yourself. We can't wait to try them!

Shit Skiers Say...Our Contribution #shitskierssay

So we saw this hilarious video demonstrating the 'Shit Skiers Say', another addition to the "Shit___Say" videos across the Net with skier Reed Speedman up at Whistler Blackcomb.

We thought it was hysterical and it inspired us to document some of the phrases we've heard over the years too and add some other categories - we might even make it a weekly thing, lets see. So check it out and please feel free to send in your own overheard phrases, or indeed things you are guilty of saying yourself. Enjoy!
